Daniel O'Donnell delighted with the call to strut his stuff on Strictly Come Dancing

By Amanda Ferguson

He's been throwing shapes on stage for more than 25 years and now legendary Irish singer Daniel O'Donnell has been revealed as the latest celebrity to sign up for Strictly Come Dancing.

The 53-year-old entertainer from Kincasslagh, Co Donegal, joins Jeremy Vine, Ainsley Harriott, Kellie Bright, Georgia May Foote, Katie Derham, Carol Kirkwood and Peter Andre in the line-up for the popular televised dance competition.

The I Wanna Dance With You singer loves to boogie and says he is up for the intensive Strictly challenge.

"Earlier this year I decided to take a short break from touring and told myself that I would only consider doing something if it was both different and exciting," he said.

"Well, what could be more exciting than Strictly Come Dancing?

"I love to dance, and boy am I looking forward to getting started and being the best that I can be."

An international singing sensation, Daniel rose to public attention in 1983 and has since become a household name across the UK and Ireland.

He has also enjoyed considerable success in both the US and Australia.

In 2012 Daniel became the first artist to have a different album in the British charts every year for 25 consecutive years.

Known for his close relationship with his fan base, and his charismatic and engaging stage presence, the cult country and folk singer has sold more than 15 million albums.

Daniel has had 20 UK Top 40 albums, as well as 15 Top 40 singles.

He has garnered considerable success in North America, and has charted 18 releases in the Top 20 of the United States Billboard's World Music Album Chart, and has also had a number of entries in the Independent Albums Chart, too. More celebrity contestants for the new series of Strictly Come Dancing will be announced in due course, said the BBC.

Daniel is emerging as a frontrunner with bookies.

Novelties and politics trader for Betfair, Cormac Dowling, said: "Despite only half of this year's contestants having been confirmed, we've already seen a huge amount of support for 9/2 favourite Peter Andre.

"Daniel O'Donnell has become the eighth confirmed celebrity to take part in the glittery proceedings this year and after pulling out some frankly astonishing moves during his performance at The Rose of Tralee final this week, he's already won our vote and we make him 7/1 third favourite to win the show."

Strictly Come Dancing returns to BBC One for its 13th series next month.
