Denise Welch joins EastEnders as transgender Kyle's mum
Denise Welch is joining the cast of EastEnders, the actress has revealed.
The former Coronation Street star and Loose Women panellist, 57, will appear as Alison Slater, mum to transgender character Kyle.
She told The Mirror that she was "thrilled" to be taking on the powerful role.
She said: "I'm thrilled to be part of such an iconic show. I have friends in the cast and can't wait to start.
"It's a short stint but such a powerful role and I'm thrilled to be taking it on."
Welch starred as Natalie Horrocks in Coronation Street from 1997 to 2000.
Since then she has been seen on Waterloo Road as flirtatious French teacher Steph Haydock and Boy Meets Girl - a BBC 2 sitcom about a transgender character.
She has just released her debut novel, If They Could See Me Now.
Transgender actor Riley Carter Millington plays Kyle Slater. The character is an aspiring chef from Blackpool who moves to London and works at Burger King.
Before joining the show in October 2015, he said: "I am extremely excited to be joining EastEnders. I can honestly say that I have now fulfilled my two biggest dreams - to be living my life as a man and to be an actor.
"I cannot wait to really get stuck in with filming and I look forward to seeing what is in store for my character."
Welch's character is expected to meet her child living as a man for the first time.
