Ian McShane listened to Bob Dylan to get into the spirit of his character in the new Pirates Of The Caribbean film.
The actor, who played dodgy antiques dealer Lovejoy on British TV for many years, said music helped him with his role as the fearsome Blackbeard.
He said: "Every morning before we stuck on this incredible beard, which used to take about two and a half hours, I used to play a lot of music especially Bob Dylan's song Boots Of Spanish Leather, that old pirate song I think.
"The way of acting any character I think is you plant your feet, look the other character in the eye and try not to trip over your sword."
McShane, who played the famously foul-mouthed Al Swearengen in American television series Deadwood, said it was "nice to play an evil character... but one I could actually see with my grandchildren".
