Dynamic Elina Vahala and Andres Diaz dazzle and delight
Violinist Elina Vahala and cellist Andrés Díaz combined to stunning effect in a searing performance of Kodaly's Duo For Violin And Cello.
This was a beautifully integrated interpretation, one instrument dovetailing seamlessly with the other, as in the deft interleaving of pizzicato commentaries in the opening Allegro serioso movement.
The Presto finale boiled up to a furious climax, Vahala ripping into the wild gypsy melodies with evident relish. It's difficult to imagine this wonderful piece played better.
Elsewhere, French horn player Richard Watkins gave a poised, unflappable account of Bernhard Krol's imprecatory Laudatio, before his son Alexei and student Hannah Miller joined him for three jovially Mozartian horn trios by Bohemian composer Anton Reicha.
