Emilia Fox loving lesbian role

Emilia Fox says it was "wonderful" to film steamy scenes as an upper-class lesbian in period drama Upstairs Downstairs.

The Silent Witness actress told Closer magazine that she was "not nervous" about portraying her character's affair with co-star Alex Kingston (Dr Blanche Mottershead).

"Alex and I make a great pair of lovers!" said the actress, who plays Lady Portia Alresford in the BBC One drama. "It was wonderful - we just went for it.

"We weren't nervous, because we just decided to have fun with it and it's good to be asked to do something you've never done before."

Heidi Thomas, the show's writer and executive producer, has promised "a real whiff of scandal in the air" when the relationship is revealed on the show, with the scenes to be aired next month.

Heidi said: "These are two brilliant, intellectual women who have a deeply romantic friendship. It causes a bit of a stir when it all comes out, but Blanche finds support from an unlikely quarter."

Upstairs Downstairs, which is set in Edwardian London, attracted more than seven million viewers for its opening episode.
