Former Doctor Who Colin Baker approves of Jodie Whittaker casting
Jodie Whittaker will be taking over from Peter Capaldi as the Doctor later this year (17).
Former Doctor Who star Colin Baker has given Jodie Whittaker's casting as the first Time Lady his stamp of approval.
Following current Time Lord Peter Capaldi's announcement that he would be leaving the show, speculation began that bosses would try and keep with the times by introducing the programme's first ever female Doctor.
And, sure enough, Broadchurch star Jodie was revealed as the new Time Lady by the BBC on Sunday (16Jul17).
Her casting has received mixed responses from fans, although mostly positive, and Colin is one of those who thinks the actress will be perfect in the role.
"Whenever I have been interviewed about Doctor Who, the question has come up about the possibility of a female Doctor," Colin, who starred as the Doctor in the series from 1984 to 1986, wrote in Britain's The Guardian newspaper.
"I have never been able to think of any logical reason why an alien being capable of regenerating in extremis would necessarily retain all or indeed any of the characteristics of his (or her) pre-renewal self."
Colin continued in his piece to explain that he believes Jodie's casting is an important move for female roles on the small screen.
"The world we live in has a history of male domination, of stereotyping, of resistance to change, of playing it safe," he added. "Doctor Who has never been about that. The Doctor in all his incarnations has always been a passionate defender of justice, equality, fairness and resisted those who seek to dominate or destroy.
"It is certainly true that there are fewer striking role models for young females in our society – and on television and film – and fewer realistic opportunities to see paths through to the kind of success to which they have every right to aspire."
Jodie will be introduced as the Doctor later this year, before Peter departs the show after the annual Christmas episode.
As well as Colin's backing, Peter was also thrilled with Jodie's casting, saying in a statement: "Anyone who has seen Jodie Whittaker’s work will know that she is a wonderful actress of great individuality and charm. She has above all the huge heart to play this most special part. She’s going to be a fantastic Doctor."
