George Clooney worried wife wouldn't accept proposal
The actor knew he wanted to marry Amal from very early in their relationship.
George Clooney feared his wife Amal would turn down his marriage proposal, because they had only been dating a few months.
The Gravity star decided to pop the question in April, 2014, and had the big moment mapped out, but he wasn't sure if his human rights lawyer girlfriend was ready to take the big jump into marriage with one of Hollywood's most famous bachelors after just six months of dating.
"It was a full-on leap of faith," he tells The Hollywood Reporter. "She was in England, coming back (to Los Angeles), and she'd had a conversation with her parents, who were like, 'What are George's intentions?' And she was saying, 'Take it easy. We've been going out for six months'. And then she showed up."
On 28 April, 2014, George cooked a romantic dinner for his soon-to-be wife and had a playlist of his late aunt Rosemary Clooney's songs playing while they enjoyed their meal.
"I did pasta of some form, not that impressive," he adds. "And then over champagne, after dinner, I told her there was a lighter to light the candle in the drawer, and she reached back and pulled out a ring.
"I did all the stuff, got down on my knee and did all the things you're supposed to do. I had a playlist with my Rosemary songs on it and I was waiting for this song, Why Shouldn't I?... And it played, and she's like, 'Holy s**t!'"
Amal kept George waiting for her response as she just stared at the ring on her finger: "She just kept going, 'Oh, my God'. It was 20 minutes of me on my knee, waiting for her to say yes, because she was so shocked..."
George and Amal wed in Italy later that year and they are now parents to twins Ella and Alexander.
