Half of viewers watch X Factor

Millions of viewers tuned in to give X Factor a whopping 50% share of television audiences on Saturday night, ITV said.

A peak audience of 12.5 million viewers were watching the popular talent show, which featured 20-year-old Lascel Wood from Brighton wowing the judging panel with his rendition of Use Somebody by Kings Of Leon.

Together with the game show Red or Black? and The Jonathan Ross Show, X Factor gave ITV1 an average of 6.3 million viewers or 28% share during Saturday peak time (7.00-10.30pm), the channel said.

Over on BBC, Strictly Come Dancing peaked at nine million viewers, with an average of 7.6 million fans or 37.3% share.

A BBC spokesman said: "We are well up on last year - adding 0.7 million - which is a great start to the series, so we are all very happy and looking forward to our first live shows where viewers will get to see the celebs and their partners take to the floor for the first time."

Earlier in the day a peak audience of some 4.9 million sports fans watched England take on Argentina in their first game of the Rugby World Cup, making up a 46% share.
