Helen Skelton: 'Christmas is all about family'

Helen Skelton’s son Ernie is gearing up for an exciting second Christmas, with the wrapping paper and festive lights his favourite elements.

Helen Skelton is looking forward to spending Christmas with her family this year.

The former Blue Peter presenter is mother to 18-month-old son Ernie with husband Richie Myler. Helen, Richie and Ernie live in France and consequently spent the festive season away from their relatives last year, but this December will see the group surrounded by their loved ones as they mark the special day.

“Rich and I are both close to our families and we’re determined to get back this year, even if it’s just for the day,” she told Hello magazine. “My brother and his wife have just had a baby boy so we’re really keen to be around them.

“We missed everyone too much last year. We were at the beach and we had a really nice experience and it’s something we’ll never forget for our little boy’s first Christmas. But I think it made us realise that for us Christmas is about family.”

Helen also joked the awkward parts of a family Christmas are the aspects she looks forward to the most, adding: “All the aunties and uncles you think you don’t want to see and all the annoying party games you think you don’t want to play – actually that is Christmas for us.

“We miss the snowballs and the party games and the arguments over the remote!”

This year will also be a more exciting one for Ernie now that he’s a little older. But Helen isn’t worrying too much about getting him lots of presents, because the wrapping paper is what delights him the most.

“On his birthday he just loved the paper – we bought him loads of presents but he just wanted to rip the paper and scrunch it up,” she laughed. “But he’s into the lights. He won’t understand the concept of Father Christmas though. He’s bright, but he’s not a genius!”
