Imagine has been named the most popular John Lennon track on the 30th anniversary of the musician's death.

The singer-songwriter was shot by Mark Chapman as he returned to his New York apartment on December 8, 1980.

Lennon followed his career in The Beatles with success as a solo artist and as part of the Plastic Ono Band.

Imagine is the tune most often played - notching up 12 million performances in the last five years alone - and is joined in the top 10 by other anti-war songs Happy Christmas (War is Over) and Give Peace a Chance.

The chart was released by PRS for Music, which collects royalties on behalf of songwriters, and is based on airplay and live covers of the songs since 2005.

Chairman Ellis Rich said: "Lennon's iconic songs inspired and symbolised the ideals of the masses, so it's no surprise that 30 years after his death his songs are still as popular as ever.

"His invaluable contribution to the music industry has shaped and inspired countless other musicians.

"It is absolutely right and fitting to remember him on this anniversary and for the effect his song catalogue has had on all of our lives."

Millions of fans around the world will mark the anniversary and the focus of the memorials in the UK will be in John's home city of Liverpool, where hundreds of people are expected to attend a vigil.

Fans on the other side of the Atlantic are expected to pay their respects at the Strawberry Fields memorial garden in Central Park, directly opposite the spot where he was gunned down.
