Jamelia sacked from Loose Women - report
An ITV spokesperson has downplayed reports that Jamelia has been axed from Loose Women, insisting the former singer is currently being kept busy filming for This Morning.
Jamelia has reportedly been axed from Loose Women after ITV chiefs were angered by controversial comments she made about plus-size clothing in April 2015.
The former singer joined the panel of the lunchtime programme in November, 2013. While the majority of her opinions have won over viewers, it was her close-to-the-mark quotes about clothing for bigger women that is said to have led to her axing.
"Jamelia really annoyed bosses with her comments on high street shops selling bigger clothes," a source told The Sun newspaper. "The show is often close to the bone but those comments were the final straw. Loose Women’s viewers come in all shapes and sizes and the producers don’t want them to be offended."
Jamelia had divided opinion when she insisted plus size clothing is a way of "facilitating people living an unhealthy lifestyle".
"In the same way, I don't believe a size zero should be available," she continued on the show. "It's not a healthy size for an average woman to be. In high street stores, you're catering for the average woman. There's a healthy range. I don't believe they should be providing clothes for below that range or above that range.
"I'm not saying that nowhere should. Yes you should have specialist shops, but I do think you should feel uncomfortable if you are unhealthy."
An ITV spokesperson downplayed the reports that Jamelia's remarks cost her her job, telling The Sun: "Jamelia is currently filming some new items for This Morning."
These items are beauty features for black women, the first of which aired last week and showed the singer demonstrating how to style Afro hair.
When Jamelia's involvement with Loose Women was first announced, she said in a statement she was looking forward to sharing her opinions.
"I’m absolutely chuffed to become a Loose Woman! I'm really looking forward to sharing my thoughts and feisty opinions with the other women and the viewers and can't wait to get my teeth into some great debates and to discuss issues that really matter," she said at the time.
A spokesperson for Jamelia has been contacted by Cover Media for comment on The Sun's claims.
