Jimmy Carr has apologised after making a joke about a car crash on Twitter in the wake of the M5 pile-up that claimed seven lives.

The joke, posted on his official page on the site, was removed after criticism.

It said: "An (sic) couple married for 66 yrs died within 3 days of each other. That's nothing. My grandparents died on exactly the same day... car crash."

Jimmy insisted the joke did not relate to the accident in Somerset on Friday evening but tweeted that he was sorry.

"Very bad timing by me," the comedian said. "The joke was obviously not about recent tragic events. Apologies if any offence caused."
