Julia Stiles: My killer decision

Julia Stiles has revealed being told her character would be a killer was what persuaded her to appear in hit US drama Dexter.

The star of 10 Things I Hate About You and the Bourne trilogy plays a kidnap victim called Lumen who joins forces with the murdering hero, played by Michael C Hall, to take revenge.

Julia revealed: "I wasn't really looking to do television, although I think there's a lot of really good programming out there."

She went on: "I was a fan and when they called it was a leap of faith because they couldn't actually show me a script, but they told me the broad strokes of what my character got to do and I said, 'Does she get to kill anyone?' When they said yes, I was sold."

The 30-year-old actress also revealed that despite the dark subject matter of the show, she had fun while working on Dexter.

Julia explained: "You do have to have a sense of humour on set, but it was pretty hard to crack jokes, considering the subject matter we were dealing with.

"There were a couple of episodes where there was a lot of wordplay and comic relief and that was my respite from the dark harrowing stuff.

"I like to think of myself as an actress who doesn't take her work home with her, but at the end of the season I definitely had gone to some darker places."

:: Dexter starts on FX tonight (June 17).
