Katie Derham steps out for Proms following Strictly success

Katie Derham has admitted she hung up her dancing shoes after December's Strictly Come Dancing final.

The newsreader and BBC Proms presenter waltzed to success in the celebrity dance contest alongside partner Anton Du Beke.

But she said she had not taken to the dance floor since coming fourth last year.

However, she will now be dancing again alongside other Strictly favourites including Janette Manrara, Kevin Clifton and Aljaz Skorjanec at a special performance at the Proms.

She told the Radio Times: "I've been panicking, because the last time I did any dancing at all was on 19 December, the night of the final.

"I meant to keep it up, but life got in the way.

"Thank heavens for muscle memory. It did come back, once rehearsal began."

This will be Derham's seventh year as host of the Proms, but the first time she will be one of the performers.

With dance on the agenda, some classical music fans have doubts about changing the formula of the Proms, which were first held in 1895.

But Derham said: " An orchestral concert to celebrate the music of ballroom dancing makes perfect sense.

"It's not crowbarring it in - you don't argue about there being an orchestra at the ballet, do you? Dance and music are a natural fit."

The Strictly Prom will take place at the Royal Albert Hall on July 21, with accompaniment from the BBC Concert Orchestra. It will be broadcast on Radio 3 and the following day on BBC 4.
