Kierston learnt about drugs on set

Kierston Wareing learnt "loads" about growing cannabis while filming Top Boy, the actress has revealed.

The Shadow Line star plays a pregnant woman who turns to growing cannabis to earn money in the Channel 4 drama, and found out a lot about the techniques of growing the illegal drug while filming.

She said: "I did learn loads but they've cut it out, there was a whole line about the pH balance, about when it changes colour, there were lots of details and I had to talk about what to do and how to change the water, but I did learn the whole method and what the lighting should be like at the time."

She didn't mind about whether they were real plants used on set or not though, she joked.

"I don't think they were!" she said.

"I never asked, they didn't smell. They looked real when I went in there but they didn't smell, so I don't think so."

Kierston added that she was gripped by the drama, about an impoverished inner city community where crime is seen as the most direct route to wealth and status, the moment she opened the script.

"I couldn't put it down when I first read it," she said.

Ashley Waters and Kano also star in the series, which starts on Monday, October 31.
