Downton Abbey star Allen Leech has said it is "going to take some time" before his character finds love again after the death of his on-screen wife.

Allen's chauffeur-turned estate manager Tom Branson is still mourning Lady Sybil who died in series three of the hit ITV drama.

He said: "I think the relationship he had with Sybil was pretty special, the idea of that class... the fact he crossed the class divide as well, I think it's going to take some time to manage that."

However, although Allen could not divulge much more about the widowed father's future, it has already been reported that his character will eventually find romance with his child's governess, played by Daisy Lewis.

Allen also said viewers would see him bond with Lady Mary, played by Michelle Dockery, in series four after the death of her on-screen husband Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens).

He said: "I think the relationship with Tom and Mary is they are unified in their grief and they are the only people who really know what the other person has been through. They're both now widowed, they've both got a young child and they form a great friendship from that because they help each other."

Executive producer Gareth Neame said he would "carry on killing off" more characters from the show, according to the Daily Mirror.

He said of Matthew Crawley's death: "I'm conscious I brought 10 million Christmas Days to a sudden and abrupt end. What was actually a gentle episode of a holiday, suddenly there was a sting in the tail. But these are the moments and the stuff of this kind of drama.

"It is romantic, hopefully laugh out loud funny at times and has got dramatic stories with twists and turns. As shocking as that was, there are life and death situations that will happen to any family from time to time."
