Former daytime television favourite Richard Madeley looks set to cross the Atlantic in search of his roots in the BBC1 show Who Do You Think You Are?

Madeley, who was born and brought and up in Romford, Essex, let it slip he is set to appear in the next series of the popular show where celebrities trace their family trees.

And he revealed further details on the micro-blogging site Twitter.

He wrote: "Right, done all my US visa paperwork for Who Do U T U R, photo etc".

The show, which first appeared on screens in 2004, has been a massive hit and has been adapted for international audiences including America, South Africa and Sweden.

Highlights have included Newsnight's Jeremy Paxman being moved to tears after hearing about his great-grandmother's poverty-stricken life and Sex and the City star Kim Cattrall's discovery that her grandfather was a bigamist who abandoned his family.

A BBC spokeswoman said: "We will be announcing the names of the stars for the next series in due course."

Madeley became a household name presenting This Morning on ITV with his wife Judy Finnigan for 13 years before the pair moved to Channel 4 where their show, Richard & Judy, ran for seven years.
