Matt Smith: Capaldi will be perfect

Matt Smith has given Peter Capaldi his seal of approval - saying he'll make a "brilliant" new Doctor.

The Thick Of It star, 55, will become the 12th Time Lord in Doctor Who when he takes over from Matt, 30, in the BBC sci-fi series.

Matt told the Daily Mirror that the pair had been out to lunch at London's posh Wolesley restaurant to discuss the role, but that the Scottish actor didn't need any pointers.

"I really rate Peter - he's such an amazing actor and completely right for the part," he said.

"We went out for lunch to talk Doctor tactics. I'm not sure if I gave him any real ideas because it's not like he needs much help. He'll play the Doctor in his own way - and do it brilliantly.

"I can't wait to see what he does with the part."

Meanwhile it has been revealed that Matt, who will be killed off by Cybermen in this year's Christmas special, will wear a wig for his final scenes in Doctor Who.

The actor will replace his trademark floppy fringe with the hairpiece in his last episode as he had to shave his head for a film role.

He told The Sun: "Wearing a wig is a nightmare but I'm excited. I start shooting on Sunday. It'll be sad - the end of a wonderful era."

Matt, 30, went skinhead for his part in How To Catch A Monster, a film written and directed by Ryan Gosling about a boy who discovers a secret underwater town, which is due out next summer.
