Matt Terry crowned winner of The X Factor

Matt Terry struggled to hold back his tears as he was named the winner of the 2016 series of The X Factor.

Matt Terry has been named the winner of The X Factor 2016.

The 23-year-old former waiter had consistently impressed judges and viewers during his time on the ITV show, and his talent was rewarded as he beat rival Saara Aalto to the crown.

Struggling to control his emotions after the result was announced and Ed Sheeran was revealed as the writer of this year's winner's single, When Christmas Comes Around, Matt told the audience: "Thank you so much".

Music mogul Simon Cowell told Matt his Syco record label will give him "100 per cent", adding to the winner and runner-up Saara: "I want to say to both of you, you came into this final as good artists and you’ve ended as great artists. The thing I’m most proud about, about this show, is seeing Little Mix and some of these other artists tonight, what they’ve done with their lives and this is why we make this show. You are now part of that chapter."

Voting statistics released by ITV showed that Matt came top in the first show of the series, and four other programmes, while coming in second or third in five other episodes. The final saw Matt crowned the winner after getting 48.5 per cent of the vote, compared to Saara's 40.4 per cent.

After Matt was named the winner, One Direction star Louis Tomlinson took to Twitter to offer his congratulations, tweeting: "Congratulations MattTerry93! Well deserved. XFactorFinal."

Louis had performed his debut solo single on the Saturday episode of the final, despite his mother Johannah dying just days before following a battle against an aggressive form of leukemia.

On Monday (12Dec16), Matt took to his Twitter page to reveal his favourite bits of being part of The X Factor, posting a lengthy note thanking everybody involved in the show.

Of host Dermot O'Leary, he said: "Dermot, every single Sunday I swear you took that little bit longer before telling us the results! You are one of the coolest guys I've ever met with a heart of gold man. I feel so privileged to have been able to work with you through this whole experience! Love you mate!"

He also thanked The Xtra Factor hosts Rylan Clark-Neal and Matt Edmondson, writing: "Rylan and Matt, thank you guys for being there and making this experience so much fun!! You guys are awesome and never fail to make every weekend an absolute blast!! Love you guys!!"
