Melanie Sykes lands Blind Date voiceover role

Melanie Sykes will take on the role previously filled by "our Graham" on the much-loved dating show.

Melanie Sykes has landed a role on the Blind Date reboot alongside Paul O'Grady.

While the programme will be hosted by Paul, Melanie will be the voiceover - formerly a part taken on by Graham Skidmore, nicknamed "our Graham" by the show's late presenter Cilla Black.

After the news was announced, Melanie said in a statement: "It’s an honour to be joining such an iconic show and to be working alongside my dear friend Paul. I can’t wait to help a new generation find love on the show.”

Channel 5 Commissioner Sean Doyle added: "Mel has the perfect mix of charm, cheek and warmth to work on this new version of Blind Date."

The much-loved programme is being brought back to the small screen on Channel 5 after its former success with Cilla as the presenter on ITV for 18 years. But after the TV veteran's tragic death two years ago, Paul, 61, has stepped in to honour his late friend by ensuring the series stays true to its original format.

"Blind Date is an incredibly special family show which brought laughter, tears and joy to TV viewers throughout out the land," Paul said in a statement. "I am honoured to present the brand new series and after speaking to Channel 5, I know the series is in safe hands. I can't wait to see if we can find love."

There will also be one major change to the dating show - LGBT contestants are welcome to participate, something openly gay Paul is particularly proud of.

Blind Date producers confirmed: "The show will reflect the present day whilst maintaining the humour, charm and cheekiness of the original show."
