Miranda's heart in midwife drama
Miranda Hart has revealed that she was hand-picked to star in the new drama Call The Midwife just before the author's death.
The comidienne, 39, plays hapless Chummy in an episode of the BBC One drama, based on the late Jennifer Worth's best-selling books.
She was picked for the role as a midwife, after Jennifer spotted her in her sitcom, and told TV Times: "She sent me the book and I thought, 'I really hope I get to play this woman'. I was thrilled to be asked.
"Chummy is plunged into a world that she doesn't fit into but midwifery is her calling - it makes her heart skip."
Writer and nurse Jennifer's trilogy of books were based on her career delivering babies in 1950s East London.
Miranda said she had always wanted to be in a drama, telling the magazine: "I see myself as a comedy actress rather than a stand-up, so it wasn't really that different.
"It was just weird at the end of every take saying to the director, 'That wasn't funny, was it?'."
