Nina: Vampire Diaries our own world

The Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev has admitted the show was born out of "the Twilight phenomenon", but now it has become "a beast of its own".

The 23-year-old actress stars as Elena Gilbert in the hit ITV2 show, a teenager who falls in love with 162-year-old vampire Stefan Salvatore.

Nina revealed at PaleyFest 2012: "I think we've definitely lucked out because of the Twilight phenomenon, but at the same time we've created a world of our own.

"We've created these characters and these lives and it's so much more than what it initially started out as. It's a beast of its own and there's such a rich history and the characters are definitely compelling and lovely. You feel for them."

Paul Wesley, who plays vampire hero Stefan, revealed how he begged show creators Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec to let him turn evil in the new series.

He said: "Season three could not have been a more interesting season for me.

"I told Julie and Kevin 'Come on I want to make him dark.'

"I had no idea they were going to have me doing some of the stuff that was really sociopathic. Really good stuff. About as bad as it gets."

He added: "We needed that. In season three we needed our hero to show some flaw and some darkness or the show would have just been stale."
