No short men please: Caroline Wozniacki ready to date after spilt from Rory McIlroy

By Maureen Coleman

Tennis star Caroline Wozniacki has broken her silence over her split with ex-fiance Rory McIlroy, saying she was "shocked" he ended their engagement during a 10-minute telephone call.

The Dane (24), who was in a relationship with McIlroy for three years, said the break-up was "very hard" on her because it was played out in public.

And in a dig at McIlroy's height, 5ft 10in Wozniacki, who is two inches taller than her ex, said that next time she dated, she would choose a taller man.

McIlroy called time on their relationship in May this year, days after the couple sent out wedding invites.

At the time, he claimed the break-up had been "mutual and amicable", although a statement released to the press contradicted this. In it he said: "The problem is mine. The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realise that I wasn't ready."

However, in an interview with Yahoo! News, Wozniacki said she was disappointed he had not told her face-to-face.

"It was very hard because he made it public from the start," she added. "He put out a press release so I didn't have a choice, you know? It just got put in my face.

"I was shocked. I thought I would get a face-to-face or something. But there was nothing – just a phone call. I did not hear from him again. I don't think you expect to find yourself in a situation like that. You can't prepare yourself or your body for anything like that, so I think I was in a bit of a shocked phase there for a while."

Wozniacki, who this week clinched second place in the US Open, also showed her scars were still raw by joking about McIlroy's height. When asked what she wanted in a man, she replied: "I would like a taller guy so I can wear heels."

It is not the first time she has made a cheeky comment about wearing high heels. In July, she tweeted a picture and herself and a friend in high heels with the caption: "Out and about in Istanbul. It's been three years since I have worn high heels on a normal day out."

McIlroy and Wozniacki began dating in 2011 and when they got engaged, Wozniacki wrote: "Happy new year everyone! Rory and I started 2014 with a bang! ... I said YES!!!!"

Both sports stars have enjoyed a return to form since the split.

Just days after calling off the engagement, 25-year-old McIlroy went on to win the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

And in July, he won the British Open, before going on to win the US PGA Championship.

Wozniacki (24), meanwhile, bounced back to win the Istanbul Cup and narrowly missed out on the US Open title. She has made $18m in her playing career.

Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki began dating in 2011 after meeting at a boxing match in Germany. Holywood man McIlroy had previously been in a relationship with local girl Holly Sweeney. The high-profile sports stars, known as Wozilroy, got engaged on New Year's Eve 2014 (below) after a three-year relationship, announcing the news on Twitter. Four months later, McIlroy called time on the engagement during a telephone call, just days after the wedding invitations had been sent out. McIlroy later said he was not ready for all that marriage entails.
