Northern Ireland Christmas lights 2017: Switch on details in your area

The festive season is upon us and while some may complain it's way too early, others are ready to embrace the Christmas spirit.

And what better way to get in the festive mood than celebrating the turning on of Christmas lights throughout Northern Ireland.

Here's all the details you need for the Christmas lights switch on in your area:


When: Saturday, November 18

Time: 6.30pm - 7.30pm

Where: Belfast City Hall

Who: Join the Lord Mayor, Councillor Nuala McAllister and guests; the Cool FM Breakfast crew, Bing and Flop, The Twirlywoos, Milkshake Live’s Derek and Jen and Cavehill Primary School choir to kick off the festive season with the annual Christmas lights switch-on.

When: Thursday, November 23

Time: 6pm-8pm

Where: Guildhall Square & Waterloo Place

Who: Get into the festive spirit and join Santa and his special guests at the city's Christmas Lights Switch-On.

Enjoy walkabout street characters, live festive music by Sensation in Guildhall Square and Superstition in Waterloo Place and real reindeers in the Peace Garden from 5pm - 8 pm.

Time: 2pm-5.30pm

Where: Abercorn Square and Railway Street

Who: Santa and his reindeers are on their way to Strabane to enjoy a day of face painting,  Elf Workshops, a Christmas movie, animated characters and live music.

Time: 4pm - 7pm

Where: Ballymena Town Centre

Who: A new location at the bandstand for a festive switch on and a special broadcast of  this year’s eagerly anticipated Christmas TV ad.

There will be a reindeer parade, musical acts, Christmas characters, lantern parade and seasonal food and craft stalls plus much more. Shops will also be open late to let  you get the shopping started.

Time: 6pm - 8pm

Where: Larne Town Centre

Who: A horse-drawn carriage will lead Santa and the magical festive parade around Larne town centre, with extra ambience provided by local choirs and bands.

The lights switch on will take place at the Broadway bandstand.

Time: 7pm

Where: The Diamond

Who: Country music star Johnny Brady will provide entertainment along with local schools and churches. There'll also be a Kids Farm, walkabout characters, a grotto and a streetwise lantern parade.

Time: 6.30pm

Where: Ballymoney Town Centre

Who: Festivities with Beatz Entertainments and carol singing from local choirs followed by the switch-on at 7.30pm with Santa and the Mayor followed by live music from Curve.

Entertainment includes:

  • Live DJ & children's entertainment in High Street and Castlecroft Square
  • Santa's Grotto with a chocolate present for primary school children
  • Craft fair in Ballymoney Town Hall from 6.30pm
  • Shops and cafes open late

Time: 4.30pm

Where: Roe Valley Arts & Cultural Centre

Who: Entertainment will be provided in Drumceatt Square before Santa and Causeway Coast and Glens Mayor Cllr Joan Baird arrive by horse drawn carriage to switch on the lights at 5:15pm.

After the switch on festivities will continue with DJ entertainment. Visit Santa’s grotto where primary school aged children (accompanied by an adult) will receive a small gift to enjoy before Christmas.

Time: 6pm

Where: The Diamond

Who: The fun begins with Beatz Entertainment and carol singing from primary school children. The Christmas Parade including the Mayor, Santa and his Clydesdale horses will make its way through the town to the Diamond area before the switch-on at 7pm followed by live entertained from Dreemz.

Where: The Crescent

Who: Festive entertainment before the Christmas lights are switched on at 5pm with Santa and Alderman Maura Hickey.

Where: Main Street Car Park

Who: There will be DJ entertainment before Santa and Causeway Coast and Glens Deputy Mayor Cllr Cathal McLaughlin arrive by horse-drawn carriage to switch on the lights at 5pm.

Primary school aged children (accompanied by an adult) will have the opportunity to meet Santa in his grotto where they each will receive a small gift to enjoy before Christmas.

Time: 6.30pm

Where: Portrush Town Hall

Who: Entertainment begins at 6.30pm with a DJ and help from local primary school choirs and Portrush Theatre Company.

A true community element will be added to the evening with the local retail sector extending some festive refreshments. Santa, escorted by Alderman Norman Hillis, will arrive to switch on the lights at 7.30pm.

Time: 4pm

Where: The Diamond

Who: Festive characters, music and carol singing from local primary school children. Santa and Councillor Roisin Loftus will switch on the lights at 5pm.


When: Wednesday, December 7

Time: 6.30pm

Where: The Diamond

Who: Live music and carol singing with Santa bringing along his mobile grotto, and each child of primary school age and under (accompanied by an adult) will receive a small pre-Christmas gift to mark the occasion.


When: Saturday, November 25

Time: 10am - 6pm

Where: Strule Arts Centre/Omagh Town Centre

Who: A huge programme of Christmas music, movies, festive foods, and lantern parade

Take part in the Christmas Elf trail, follow the clues around the town centre to locate each of the Elves and enter into a draw to be in with a chance of winning a special prize.

Time: 3pm

Where: The Diamond

Who: A great programme of family entertainment has been arranged in the town centre, including face painting, balloon modelling, stilt walkers and cartoon characters. Music will be provided by the Marty Fay Band, who will perform live at the Diamond. The seasonal atmosphere will be created with a Christmas Flash Dance near the Christmas Tree at 4pm while everyone waits for the arrival of Santa’s Parade.

At 5.30pm, the Chairman of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Thomas O’Reilly, will press the button to light up the 10 metre high tree at the Diamond as well as the lights around Enniskillen.

Where: Marcus Square, Hill Street

Who: A Santa Fun Run will take place at 5.30pm and the winner will be announced just in time for Santa’s arrival at 6.45pm followed by a pyrotechnic display.

Time: 5pm

Where: St Patrick Square

Who: The Enchanted Lantern Parade returns to kick off the celebrations led by Santa and his reindeer. The Parade will start from Down County Museum and will make its way through English Street, Market Street to finish at St Patrick Square to join in the Christmas celebrations. 

Santa will be switching on the lights at 7.15pm. Keep your eyes peeled for the abseiling elves as they make their way down the Saint Patrick Centre to watch the fireworks display.
