Princess Diana organised supermodel surprise for Prince William
Christy Turlington, who was also invited to the private meeting, insists it was Claudia Schiffer who attended instead of Crawford.
Prince William once turned bright red after coming face-to-face with his supermodel crushes Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford in a special surprise organised by his late mother.
The Duke of Cambridge shares some of his most treasured memories of Diana, Princess of Wales in the new TV documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, and one of the most entertaining stories involved three of the biggest runway beauties of the 1990s - Campbell, Crawford, and Christy Turlington.
In the film, William reveals he was a prepubescent kid who didn't know what to say after finding the stars waiting for him at the family's private residence after school.
"She (Diana) organised, when I came home from school, to have Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington, and Naomi Campbell waiting at the top of the stairs," he recalled in a preview clip, released over the weekend (22-23Jul17). "I was probably a 12 or 13-year-old boy who had posters of them all on his wall, and I went bright red and didn't know quite what to say, and sort of fumbled and I think pretty much fell down the stairs on the way out.
"That was a very funny memory that's lived with me forever," he smiled.
However, William's embarrassment at the time may have clouded his memory, as Turlington has since taken to Twitter to clarify the identity of the supermodels in the story.
Asked by a fan if she had seen the Prince's interview anecdote, Christy replied of the meeting, "I remember it well. It was Claudia Schiffer, not Cindy Crawford though. Diana adored those boys (sons William and Harry)."
Elsewhere in the documentary, Prince William explains he frequently regales his children Prince George, four, and Princess Charlotte, two, with bedtime stories about the grandmother they will never get to meet.
He said, "I do regularly, putting George and Charlotte to bed, talk about her and just try to remind them that there were two grandmothers in their lives, so it's important they know who she was and that she existed."
Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy premieres in the U.K. and U.S. on Monday night (24Jul17), ahead of the 20th anniversary of her death next month (Aug17).
