RJ Mitte quits Bear Grylls' Celebrity Island TV show
Fans have taken to social media to praise the star for his common sense after he left the programme.
Breaking Bad star RJ Mitte has shocked viewers by quitting Celebrity Island with Bear Grylls.
The endurance series, which follows the same format as the regular show featuring everyday contestants, sees a group of celebrities stranded on an exotic island where they must use their wits and skills to find food, build shelter and battle the elements.
RJ, who has cerebral palsy, was part of the 2017 series but left viewers and his fellow campmates stunned on Tuesday's show (05Sept17) when the actor threw in the towel.
"I feel like everyone here is really disorganised, and, as a group, we're very dysfunctional and I don't see it changing. My only choice is to leave the island," he told the group after gathering them around.
His co-stars, including English reality TV star Lucy Mecklenburgh, begged him not to leave after they feared for their own survival without RJ there.
"He's had the most experience in the outdoors and to lose someone as important as him would be a huge loss," Lucy stated.
While RJ slept on the decision, the next day he told his fellow campers he'd made up his mind to leave and called survival expert Bear's production team to deliver the news.
"I don't feel like I can be a part of this group. In a real survival situation, some of them would've been eaten," he said.
Coronation Street actor Ryan Thomas, Olympic sprinter Iwan Thomas and former Pussycat Doll Melody Thornton are also stranded on the island.
Fans of the show flocked to Twitter to share their disappointment at RJ's departure but praised the 25-year-old for his perseverance.
"Damn! @RjMitte has left #TheIsland Didn't see that coming, he had such a great attitude!" one tweeted, while another stated: "Gutted @RjMitte leaving #CelebrityIsland. Surely they are now doomed!? He was such an asset. Love him!"
