Rory McIlroy sees the funny side as Ravenhill plays 'Sweet Caroline'

By Adrian Rutherford

Rory McIlroy's sheepish reaction summed it up perfectly after an awkward moment during a visit to Ravenhill.

The golf star was giving a pitch-side interview during Ulster's match with Connacht when the PA system started to play the Neil Diamond hit Sweet Caroline.

It was unfortunate timing for McIlroy, who broke off his engagement to tennis player Caroline Wozniacki earlier this year.

Spotting the slip-up, the bumper crowd joined in the singing.

But McIlroy saw the funny side, responding by smiling, looking down at the ground and exclaiming "Oh dear".

He had been due to marry Wozniacki in November, but in May it was announced that the pair had split, with McIlroy claiming he didn't feel "ready for all that marriage entails".

In September, Wozniacki revealed that she was informed of his decision via a phone call and had not seen her former fiancé since.

On Boxing Day the world number eight posted a photo montage of her year on Twitter - and made no reference to their break-up.

Meanwhile, not content with her status as a top tennis star, Wozniacki has shown her talents may also lie in golf.

She posted a video of her skills at the driving range, writing: "Not the prettiest golf swing, but 200 yards on the first try... Boom!"
