Ruth Langsford first spied "handsome Irish man" Eamonn Holmes on rival BBC

Ruth Langsford used to secretly watch her now-husband Eamonn Holmes on the BBC because she fancied him, even though she worked for rival ITV at the time.

The 58-year-old admitted she never could have imagined she would follow in the footsteps of married couple Richard Madley and Judy Finnigan by presenting This Morning.

Ruth said: "When This Morning started, I was working for ITV, but not on TV. I was a transmission assistant.

"I was intrigued (by This Morning) because we had heard they were married and I thought, 'We haven't seen a couple like this before'. That really fascinated me.

"On our monitors, we had one monitor that aired the BBC, which I wasn't supposed to listen to.

"But every so often, I used to switch over because there was this very handsome Irish man on there.

"I used to think, 'Oh he's a bit of alright'. Now, 30 years later, here I am married to him and presenting on the show."

But it's not all lovey-dovey for the pair on the show - if Eamonn misbehaves on set, Ruth has her own ways of letting him know.

"Her secret is she stands behind that cookery bench thing and she lifts her heel and she scrapes it down the front of my shin and then puts the stiletto right into my foot (if I misbehave)," Eamonn explained.

Ruth laughed: "If he's been annoying me, I think, 'You wait, we've got cookery soon'."
