Sarah Michelle Gellar clears up Boy George tribute gaffe

The actress mistakenly thought Boy George had died on Christmas Day before fans corrected her.

Sarah Michelle Gellar has thanked fans for correcting her after she mistakenly paid tribute to Boy George after hearing he had passed away on Christmas Day (25Dec16).

The actress got her pop star Georges mixed up after the death of George Michael on Sunday, and offered up her thoughts about the passing of the Culture Club frontman.

"Do you really want to hurt me? I guess you do 2016," she tweeted, adding the hashtag, "#ripboygeorge".

Fans quickly pointed out her mistake and Gellar returned to Twitter to correct herself.

"Just as sad when you get the correct information - #ripGeorgeMichael thank you to everyone who corrected me - it's still so sad," she wrote. "And for the record yes I completely know the difference between Boy George and George Michael - I heard incorrectly. My intentions were good. This is usually why I don't comment on public matters, but it all seemed so sad on Christmas. Lesson learned."

George Michael passed away peacefully at his home in England after reportedly suffering heart failure. He was 53.

Boy George is alive and well and preparing to judge The Voice in Australia in 2017.

The Culture Club star offered up his own tribute to Michael on Christmas Day, stating: "I am thinking of @GeorgeMichael's family, friends and fans right now. He was so loved and I hope he knew it because the sadness today is beyond words. Devastating.

"What a beautiful voice he had and his music will live on as a testament to his talent. I can't believe he is gone. I hope the Buddha will hold him in his arms."
