Sir Kenneth Branagh to film Artemis Fowl in Northern Ireland

by staff reporter

Sir Kenneth Branagh has begun production on his new film Artemis Fowl, starring Dame Judi Dench and Josh Gad, Disney has confirmed.

The director will film the adaptation of the first book of Irish author Eoin Colfer's series of the same name in England, his native Northern Ireland and Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam.

Newcomer Ferdia Shaw plays 12-year-old genius Artemis Fowl, who finds himself in a battle of strength and cunning against a powerful, hidden race of fairies who may be behind his father's disappearance.

Dame Judi plays Commander Root, the leader of the reconnaissance division of the fairy police force, and Gad plays Mulch Diggums, a kleptomaniac dwarf.

Belfast-born Branagh directed Disney's hugely successful Cinderella, which grossed more than half a billion dollars worldwide.

As one of the most sought-after directors in Hollywood, Branagh could turn the teen anti-hero into the next Harry Potter.
