Taylor Schilling enjoys chain gang

Orange Is The New Black star Taylor Schilling said working on the TV show felt like being part of her own gang.

The Lucky One actress stars with Laura Prepon, Kate Mulgrew and Jason Biggs in the Netflix comedy drama from Weeds writer Jenji Kohan. Based on the memoir by Piper Kerman, it follows Piper Chapman - played by Taylor - who ends up sentenced to a year behind bars thanks to her old friend, drug-runner Alex (Laura).

Taylor laughed: "We sort of created our own little prison gang. There was a lot of camaraderie. People would stay and watch other people's scenes.

"It was a really inspiring group to work with and a really inspiring group of performers. I felt on my toes and I felt supported and I just felt inspired by the ladies I was working with."

Piper Kerman spent time on set during filming, but Taylor revealed she didn't get to know her until after filming had begun, as her comedy character Piper Chapman is very different from the real person she is inspired by.

Taylor explained: "For me one of the things that is so interesting about Piper is that she came into this situation, she is a fish out of a water. And that was an exciting thing for me to explore.

"So we didn't have much communication until we met on set, after we'd created the fantasy world of Litchfield prison. Then we really got to know each other as the season progressed."

Orange Is The New Black is currently airing on Netflix in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland and Latin America and has already been commissioned for another series.
