TFI Friday will return with Chris Evans for a new series after success of special episode

Chris Evans is bringing back TFI Friday for a new series after a successful anniversary special earlier this month.

The New Top Gear host who also hosts the breakfast show on Radio 2, told fans the show was "coming back for a short but perfectly formed run of eight shows pre-Christmas".

"Oh my goodness, are we really going to get to do this again? Looks like it - and leading into Christmas too," he said.

"I might actually spontaneously explode on live television due to over excited-ness. Does that still count as unpredictable cos I've said it now?"

The broadcaster, recently named as Jeremy Clarkson's successor on Top Gear, scored a huge hit in the 1990s with the original TFI Friday.

Channel 4 boss Jay Hunt said confirming the new series was "a no-brainer" after the success of the special episode.

The show, which included segments such as Ugly Bloke and Freak or Unique?, returned to Channel 4 for a live special with guests including Evans's old sidekick Will Macdonald.

It drew in 4.3 million viewers - twice as many as it used to get "back in the day".

It recalled its heyday almost 20 years ago with a line-up of with guests including Shaun Ryder, who famously swore on teatime television while performing and prevented the programme from being broadcast live again.

There was also a performance by Britpop survivors Blur, a duet between Liam Gallagher and The Who's Roger Daltrey, plus Rudimental and Years & Years.

They were joined by guests including Hollywood stars Amanda Seyfried and Ewan McGregor, singers Rita Ora and Ricky Wilson, Olympian Tom Daley, presenter Kirstie Allsopp and DJ Nick Grimshaw.
