Hustle is to pull off its own sleight of hand - by disappearing from screens.
The series - about a group of sophisticated con artists - will end after a forthcoming eighth series, according to its creator Tony Jordan.
The series, launched in 2004, stars former Man From Uncle star Robert Vaughn and Adrian Lester.
Jordan told Broadcast magazine that he wanted the programme to go out on a high.
He said: "Do you allow the show to fade away or say it's been a blast and quit while you're ahead? You want to go out like James Dean in a fast car."
He suggested that the series could return with new characters in the future. The show has already seen a number of cast changes over the years.
Programme-maker Kudos said the show was being "rested".
