Tovey: I'd love to play the Doctor

Russell Tovey has said he'd love to be the new Time Lord in Doctor Who - but doesn't think he'll get the role.

The Being Human actor was linked to the job, as a replacement for David Tennant, by executive producer Russell T Davies, before it was announced that Matt Smith had signed up for the role.

Asked whether he fancied taking on the role of the Doctor now Matt is leaving, Russell, 31, said: "Yeah, it would be an incredible job to do, but don't bet on me as the Doctor this time round."

Russell, who played Midshipman Alonso Frame in Doctor Who in 2007, said: "It was incredible to be part of it as Alonso; part of that family, and especially in David Tennant's reign."

The actor, whose credits also include Him And Her and The Job Lot, also provides the voice for the dragon Squirt in CBeebies series Mike The Knight.

He said: "Growing up as a kid I loved cartoons. My biggest influence was Robin Williams when he did the genie in Disney's Aladdin. I remember watching that when I was a kid, going: 'Oh my God, I wanna do cartoons'."

:: The new series of Mike The Knight starts on CBeebies on Monday July 15 at 8am.
