Television chef James Martin made the day of patients at the Northern Ireland Hospice when he made a surprise visit on Tuesday.

Martin spent time meeting patients, staff and families at the hospice located on Somerton Road, Belfast.

Sharing pictures of his visit on Twitter, the television presenter wrote: "Just taken the afternoon off to visit the amazing work, patients and people who are in this hospice."

Patient Martin Bell, from Belfast, was thrilled to meet the presenter, telling him: "James, you've made my day."

Heather Weir, chief executive officer at NI Hospice said: "We’re absolutely delighted that James Martin took time out of his busy schedule to visit, patients, staff and families here at NI Hospice.

"It was incredibly uplifting for all the patients and it really brightened their day. Visits from high-profile celebrities, such as James Martin, are extremely beneficial as they help to raise awareness of hospice care services".

He had been visiting Northern Ireland to host his annual event at Barnabys Restaurant in Ballyclare, where attendees wine and dine on a three-course meal prepared by the chef himself.
