Val Kilmer blames media for worrying fans with health issues

The Doors star insists family matters have caused him to cancel a string of public appearances.

One-time Batman Val Kilmer has dismissed reports suggesting heath issues are behind his decision to pull out of a series of recent appearances.

The Heat star went public with his secret cancer battle in April (17), confirming long-running reports of his ill health as he insisted his swollen tongue was "healing all the time".

However, the 57-year-old had to pull out of a string of bookings in July (17), first scrapping a screening of his one-man show Citizen Twain in Tampa, Florida on 11 July (17).

On the eve of the appearance, he took to Twitter to blame "unavoidable family stuff" for the change of plans, while two weeks later, he withdrew from the Tampa Bay Comic Con event, again citing "family stuff that's got to be my priority". He was also a no-show at the launch of his own Los Angeles art exhibition, Icon Go On, I'll Go On, on 20 July (17), stating he was "delayed on a project".

The cancellations prompted fans to question his health, and now Kilmer has taken to Twitter to lash out at the press for trying to "dredge up more negative health lies because I had to shuffle shows because of family needs."

Kilmer has been battling throat cancer in recent years but he initially dismissed reports about his health after pal Michael Douglas revealed he was fighting the same disease he struggled with some years ago.

The Doors star eventually confessed Douglas was telling the truth, adding, "He was probably trying to help me 'cause press probably asked where I was these days, and I did have a healing of cancer, but my tongue is still swollen although healing all the time. Because I don't sound my normal self yet people think I may still be under the weather."
