Waissel: Cheryl had her own issues

Katie Waissel did not have long conversations with Cheryl Cole despite her gruelling X Factor experience - because her mentor "had her own problems", the wannabe singer has suggested.

Katie has told how she would cry her "eyes out" and how she "wanted to bury" herself "in a hole" after she was suddenly catapulted into the public eye on the ITV1 show. She described the experience as "horrendous" and said she "wasn't prepared" for the onslaught of negative comments.

But she added: "Cheryl and I didn't have long chats - she would just advise me not to read the papers and say she had had a hard time too."

Katie hinted that it was unlikely she would hear from her former mentor now she had been voted out of the hit show.

She told Grazia magazine: "She's very focused, which you have to be. I don't have her mobile number so I don't know if we will keep in touch. I admire her.

"But Louis was my absolute favourite. He gave me his mobile number and I'll definitely keep in touch."

The 24-year-old added: "Cheryl told me not to read the papers and she was nice but she had her own problems. This show has been tough for her."

Katie, whose constant change of image sparked criticism from viewers, said: "I never really liked all the mad clothes and make-up. I always said people wouldn't get it and I think I was right.

"Cheryl loved that side of things but she was right behind me when I wanted to cut my hair. That was when I finally got to be myself."

The full interview is in this week's Grazia, on sale now.
