William H Macy relates to Gallagher

William H Macy believes he has plenty in common with his TV alter-ego - Frank Gallagher in the US version of Shameless.

The star, hailed as the greatest character actor of his generation, takes the lead role of the drunken patriarch of the impoverished Gallagher family in the US remake of the Channel 4 cult hit.

And the 61-year-old said of his character: "He's just an extreme version of me.

"The version that happens at about 11 o'clock at night, when I'm lit up and I've just finished some work, or had a success and I'm letting my hair down. It's like living that time all the time."

William, who is married to Desperate Housewives star Felicity Huffman, admitted: "His whole addictive personality I understand completely, I love to drink.

"As a kid, if it made you high, I ate it! I graduated from high school in 1968, I was high as a kite until 1978 and I loved it.

"His sense of humour is absolutely mine, his sense of irony is me. He's a happy guy generally speaking and I think, as the years go on, we will become even more the same person."

The show has been recommissioned for a second series after the first, aired in January, was a hit for US channel Showtime. It is also being shown in the UK on More 4.

William added: "I've played a lot of buttoned up, imploding wasps in my time, so this is great fun."
