Work begins on huge Grand Opera House stage for landmark Verdi opera

By Staff Reporter

A production crew will start work today on one of the most ambitious stage sets ever to be showcased at the Grand Opera House.

Under construction in the Titanic Quarter, the set - which arrived from Chile - is for 19th century Italian opera classic Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi, which opens on September 30.

The design encompasses a 20-metre deep, eight-metre high tunnel built on pivots, which transform into different rooms, enabling different perspectives.

Walter Sutcliffe, director of NI Opera, said that theatre-goers will be left amazed by the visual impact of the stage production.

"It's our big privilege and challenge to bring this to the Grand Opera House (and) to help the people of Northern Ireland fall in love with opera and to push the boundaries of what we think we can do," he said.
