The Ulster Orchestra continued its successful series of summer BBC Invitation concerts with a demanding programme in the Ulster Hall on Friday.

The concert for the BBC Three network featured the outstanding soprano Katharina Konradi from Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia.

She was impressive throughout, and thoroughly deserved the long ovation from the audience.

The main work was Prokofiev’s dazzling Fifth Symphony, an orchestral showpiece of the highest calibre.

Under the direction of the exceptionally talented young Venezuelan-American guest conductor Ilyich Rivas, the Ulster Orchestra was equal to every demand of this most exacting work.

This performance augured well for the orchestra’s concert next Sunday evening in a Henry Wood Prom at the Royal Albert Hall in London under outgoing music director Rafael Payare.
