Dazzling dancefest has the right moves

Keith Pattison

Grand Opera House, Belfast, Wednesday-Saturday, February 22-26, 7.45pm

Strictly Come Dancing’s Craig Revel Horwood takes the reins of this new staging of the classical musical Chess and directs a stellar cast of West End stars.

James Fox, Shona White, Daniel Koek, Poppy Tierney, James Graeme and David Erik — who between them clock up success in Fame Academy, Wicked, West Side Story, Mary Poppins, The Witches of Eastwick and Phantom — lead a company of 30 actors and musicians for the Belfast production of the show.

Chess is considered by many to have one of the greatest musical scores of all time. Written by Tim Rice and Abba’s Bjorn and Benny, it includes songs like One Night in Bangkok, Pity the Child, Anthem, You And I and I Know Him So Well.

The story’s a simple one. Two of the world's greatest chess masters battle it out at the world championships, but their greatest contest is for the heart of a woman who loves one of them, and manages the other. Set against the backdrop of the Cold War, the players, one American and the other Russian, battle political intrigue and international conspiracies to win their war.

Revel Horwood has created an explosive new production with a sprinkling of camp humour throughout. The huge cast provide their own orchestral accompaniment to the story, which is set in the Italian town of Merano, where those chess championships are taking place. Expect a high energy, high volume evening, filled with bright lights, dazzling costumes and sing-along songs.
