Frozen still the hottest show on ice

Review: Disney on Ice at the Odyssey Arena

By Andrew Johnston

Disney on Ice returned to the Odyssey Arena yesterday, promising a "non-stop explosion of the hottest Disney superstars from around the globe".

As Mickey and Minnie Mouse made their entrance, it was remarkable to consider how popular these simple characters, created in 1928, remain with children.

The programme took the form of a talent show, as good a way as any for Mickey and Minnie - joined by pals Donald Duck and Goofy - to host figures from Disney's past and present. It's easy to overlook the skaters' prowess amid all the sets and costumes, but they deserve recognition for holding the production together with their power and skill.

As well received as the earlier segments were, they were merely a warm-up for Frozen, which made up the last half-hour.

It was heart-warming to see the kids' reaction as Olaf, Elsa, Anna and Kristoff crooned the songs that have tormented many a parent since the film's release in 2013.

In Summer, Reindeer(s) Are Better Than People and Let It Go had the whole hall singing along.

Disney on Ice's Magical Ice Festival is at the Odyssey Arena until Sunday.
