Only the lonely would miss this

By Grania McFadden

Grand Opera House, Belfast, Tuesday, August 24- to September 4 Tuesday to Thursday, 7.30pm Friday, 5pm and 8.30pm Saturday, 2.30pm and 7.30pm

Dig out those poodle skirts and grab those blue jeans — the Grand Opera House will be hopping when this feelgood musical hits town.

Inspired by the million-selling albums Dreamboats and Petticoats One, Two and Three, the show features some of the greatest hit songs of the rock ‘n’ roll era.

The script has been written by the legendary Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran, and the production received standing ovations every night when it played in London’s West End.

Like all the best musicals, its story is a simple one, and pretty much perfect for the dog days of summer.

It’s 1961. Emotions are running high as young wannabe musicians Norman and Bobby decide to enter a national song-writing competition.

They want to win the prize, and they want to attract the attention of the lovely Sue.

Then Bobby discovers that Laura, the quiet girl in the corner, is a bit of a whizz on the piano.

With a soundtrack that includes songs from Roy Orbison, The Shadows, Eddie Cochran and Billy Fury, as well as hits like To Know Him Is To Love Him, Runaround Sue and Let It Be Me, there’s no excuse for audiences failing to sing along.

It’s non-stop doo-wop from start to finish. There’ll be plenty of dancing in the aisles — just watch out for those blue suede shoes....
