Stars of the future show that they mean business

By Liz Baird

Ormeau Baths Gallery,|18a Ormeau Avenue, Belfast, Until Sept 11,Tues-Sat, 10am-5pm

The Ormeau Baths’ Arrivals exhibition, curated by Ciara Hickey and Feargal O’Malley, is designed to encourage and support emerging artists by offering an opportunity to introduce their work to wider audiences.

The works include installations, video, painting, photography and sculpture, with these new voices demonstrating some of the bursting excitement currently around. Prepare to be amused by pieces like Michael Hanna’s huge Mouth Chamber, a disused septic tank into which you climb and become the tongue.

Christopher McCambridge’s embroidered works examine the production of luxury goods and Martin Boyle’s iceberg-like structure made from empty soft drinks bottles.

On to Gallery No2, and suddenly, in the midst of Jack Doherty’s wonderfully inventive ceramic pieces, there is serenity and calm.

Master ceramicist Doherty is chair of the Craft Potters Association and lead potter at the world renowned Leach Pottery outside St Ives, Cornwall.

In this show he exhibits weird and wonderful ceramic oddities plus functional yet beautiful bowls and cups.
