The US dancers with all the right moves

By Grania McFadden

Grand Opera House, Belfast, Tonight and tomorrow, 7.45pm

It’s been billed as the dance highlight of the year — the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s visit to Belfast. These dancers are among the most talented of their generation and their dazzling performances have left audiences spellbound.

The company grew from a now-legendary performance in March 1958 at the 92nd Street Young Men's Hebrew Association in New York.

Led by Alvin Ailey and a group of young African-American modern dancers, that performance changed forever the perception of American dance.

Ailey II is the next generation... the students who combine the spirit and energy of America's best young dance talent with the passion and vision of the most outstanding emerging choreographers.

This toe-tapping talent is harnessed under the artistic direction of Sylvia Waters.

She handpicks the 12 members of Ailey II from the student body of the Ailey School. This junior company acts as a bridge between the school and the professional world, offering a unique chance for young artists to refine their technique and for audiences to see tomorrow’s stars today.

Prepare to be amazed!
