More than 40 Northern Ireland companies have been shortlisted across 11 categories in the Belfast Telegraph Business Awards in partnership with Ulster Bank.

A record number of entries were recorded this year, with one of the new categories, Emerging Business/Start Up of the Year, and the Best Established Small and Medium Business category, the most popular among entrants.

Judges were extremely impressed with the standard of entries in all categories, which shows the huge efforts business of all sizes and in all sectors across Northern Ireland are making both here and further afield. Professor John Simpson, chairman of the judging panel, said: "Not only are there more bids for the awards this year, but the range and expertise of the entries has become more impressive.

"Ground-breaking and innovative businesses have not been shy in staking their claims.

"The judges have tackled the task of selecting finalists in all of the award categories.

"Every entry has been scrutinised and, sometimes against a background of business success, testing new opportunities or tackling commercial challenges, finalists have been chosen."

Mr Simpson said that the three new categories reflected the wider range of techniques and expertise to be found in local business.

"Awards will be made for the first time to firms working in the provision of aspects of healthcare," he added.

"The entries show the diversity of opportunities and customer demand for personal healthcare services. An award will be also be made to an IT specialist team or company in a category that has attracted much interest from small and large organisations.

"Two of the pleasures of these awards for the panel are learning about new, young, businesses and learning about the aspirations of young business achievers.

"Applications in the new Emerging Business/Start Up category and the Young Businessperson of the Year category demonstrated that there is a cohort of up and coming businesses that are serving Northern Ireland well.

"In the field of digital or social media, applicants impressed by confirming the diversity of the services they provide."
