Nurturing the careers of young people in IT is key to our company's success
This week we speak to Version 1, sponsor of the Young IT Professional category in our IT Awards
The Version 1 team is delighted to sponsor the Young IT Professional of the Year category at the inaugural Belfast Telegraph IT Awards.
Lorna McAdoo, head of operations for Version 1 Northern Ireland, said: "We were ecstatic to be crowned the IT Company of the Year at the Belfast Telegraph awards earlier in 2019, so we are very proud to sponsor these awards and in particular the Young IT Person of the Year category.
"With the advancement of complex technologies impacting businesses of all sizes globally, shaping the next generation of IT leaders needs to be a priority for all employers - not only for the benefit it will have on revenue and performance for companies, but more importantly for the opportunities it will afford these talented young people as they develop their career in IT.
"Version 1 believes that companies often forfeit their employee experience for customer satisfaction. Instead, Version 1 believes that businesses should think of them as two halves of a whole, because happy workers with prospects beyond that of their original remit will be committed to delivering customer excellence and innovative solutions to a customer's business."
The progression of young people in IT is close to Lorna's heart. She developed a 'when you learn, teach' culture through the local Version 1 associates programme in Belfast. It develops young people as business leaders of the future by encouraging and coaching them to work with students from schools and universities. By giving back some of the support that they have encountered, this knowledge will be passed on to children who may someday become their technologists and leaders.
Lorna believes that by developing young people's talent outside of the normal day-to-day technical skills, the next generation can become confident young leaders who seek to innovate, shape and drive technology to help customers' businesses to grow through value in their IT investments.
Catherine Geddis, who works in Version 1's .Net development capability in Belfast, joined Version 1 as an associate in 2016. She said: "Working at Version 1 affords you the opportunity to work with the latest tech, consult with a diverse range of clients, learn from experienced colleagues and shape your own career. It has provided me with invaluable experience in IT. Version 1 has a fantastic people orientated culture, with a good work-life balance and many social activities.
"We would like to wish all award entrants the best of luck."
