You may have spotted the distinctive Pedro Pet Food Ltd delivery trucks making their way along Northern Ireland's roads.

It's the proud boast of the Strabane-based firm that it was one of the first companies in Northern Ireland to produce pet food and, uniquely in the local pet food industry, it still delivers its own products in its own branded fleet.

"The company started off in 1976 and it has evolved slightly since then," says sales manager Robert Shaw.

"It was originally set up to make horse feeds and that evolved into dog food. It was always set up to use the best ingredients available and was one of the first companies in Northern Ireland to produce dog food.

"The company has always stuck by its roots and it would never compromise on quality."

When Pedro Pet Foods was launched in 1976, there were just two lines of dog food, but that has expanded to around 20 now, with new emphasis on the puppy, senior and other specialist lines.

"Over the years, we moved into the pet market, which wasn't a big thing then - it was all about working dogs. Puppy food wasn't a thing in the early days either," Robert says.

"Now we have senior dog food, specialist foods for working dogs that are high energy and specialist food for sheepdogs.

"They tend to need more stamina rather than short bursts of energy, so the sheepdog food has more beef product in the form of dry cooked beef meal."

The company manufactures all its own blends to a secret recipe in its factory in Sion Mills in the hills of Tullywhisker, Co Tyrone, and employs 18 people.

The most popular line is still the original Pedro Gold dog food, an appetising mix of meat and steam cooked flaked cereals, along with added folic acid, vitamin B, biotin, seaweed and natural oils to promote natural coat shine, maintain health teeth and bones and improve stamina.

The Gun Dog range has 26% protein and is suitable for all adult working dogs, containing added joint aid for young forming bones and older joints and chelated zinc for its role in healing.

Pedro Pet Foods also offers a popular Startrite Elite line formulated for racing greyhounds.

In recent years, the company's production has doubled and now Pedro Pet Foods is one of the largest meat and cereal dog food companies in Ireland, manufacturing meat and cereal dog foods and also manufacturing dried meat for pet food markets at home and abroad.

The company supplies animal feed merchants, pet shops, hardware stores, petrol stations and large retail outlets, as well as exporting to England, Scotland and Wales.

It says its constant investment in plant and machinery keeps quality high and manufacturing times to a minimum to reduce costs.

All products are made to order and nothing is taken from stock, so the pet foods are delivered fresh.
