Belfast Telegraph Sports Awards: Special Recognition award puts spotlight on brilliance

By Graham Luney

From the heroics of the Northern Ireland football team, to our Paralympians striking gold and classy performances from sportsmen of the calibre of Carl Frampton, Jonathan Rea and Rory Best, 2016 was another phenomenal year for Northern Ireland sport.

All their special achievements and many, many more will be celebrated at a gala event when the Belfast Telegraph once again honours the province's leading sports stars of the year.

Northern Ireland is famous for punching above its weight in the sporting arena and our heroes will be honoured at the 2016 Belfast Telegraph Sports Awards bash, presented by Claire McCollum and Craig Doyle in front of a star-studded line-up at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast.

One category which puts the spotlight on individual sporting brilliance is the Special Recognition Awards and this year the proud sponsors are Northern Ireland Volvo Car Dealers.

This accolade recognises the outstanding performances of those in their chosen sport. A casual glance at the list of previous winners gives a clear indication of the class, talent and drive needed to earn this award.

Recent winners have included Olympians Paddy Barnes, Michael Conlan, Peter and Richard Chambers and Alan Campbell, road racer Michael Dunlop, cricket legend Kyle McCallan and boxing star Carl Frampton.

Also on the roll call of Special Recognition award past winners are GAA player Paul Hearty and young golfer Olivia Mehaffey.

The Special Recognition award recipients underline the extraordinary achievements of our men and women both at home and abroad. The Northern Ireland Volvo Car Dealers' high standards of excellence are reflected in this year's nominees, who have shown inspirational strength and exceptional talent in their fields.

Trusted Volvo dealers offer an extensive selection of award winning models, including the Volvo XC90 which was recently recognised for its unrivaled brilliance and was awarded the Autoexpress Large SUV of the year 2016.

SMW Belfast and Greers of Antrim and Coleraine would like to congratulate all of the nominees on their achievements so far and wish them all luck.

"Stanley Motor Works, Belfast Volvo are proud to be sponsors of the 2017 Belfast Telegraph Sports Awards, Special Recognition Category, and wish the nominees every success," said Phil Houston, SMW Sales Manager.

Andy Duke, Greers of Antrim Dealer Principal, added: "Greers of Antrim Volvo are delighted to sponsor the Special Recognition Category of the Belfast Telegraph Sports Awards of 2016, and would like to wish all the nominees the best of luck for the evening."
