Belfast Telegraph Sports Awards: Young Team of thew Year - Methody 1st XI Girls' Hockey Team

What an amazing year 2016 turned out to be for the Methody 1st XI Girls' Hockey team.

Had they just won the Belfast Telegraph Schools Cup it would have been considered a hugely successful season, but days later they went on to lift the All-Ireland Kate Russell Trophy as well.

The remarkable glory run in March began when Methody defeated holders Sullivan Upper 1-0 in the final of the Belfast Telegraph Schools Cup (Ulster Senior Cup). Played in desperately difficult weather conditions at Jordanstown, Methody emerged as victors in dramatic fashion with a late goal from captain Katie Larmour.

It was Methody's first Ulster Senior Cup triumph in 28 years.

Shortly after that they took part in the All-Ireland championships in Limerick, where they came up trumps again against the best Leinster, Munster and Connacht could offer.

Skipper Larmour was an inspirational figure once more scoring six goals but it was an extraordinary team effort that saw the Belfast school win the tournament on goal difference. Even more special was the fact it was Methody's first ever victory in the competition.
